Santa Catalina - From village to hip district
Santa Catalina has grown in popularity to become one of Palma’s trendiest neighbourhoods, since it combines its traditional charm and town-like flavour with a modern lifestyle. Named after Catherine of Alexandria, the patron saint of traders and sailors, it was originally the district where the fishermen, rope-makers and millers lived. Today, its old 18th century windmills can still be seen in a part of the neighbourhood called Es Jonquet. Where just ten years ago, there were lots of shabby old buildings, now you can find renovated terraced properties brimming with charm.
Popular location in the west of Palma
Santa Catalina is one of Palma’s most popular neighbourhoods to the west of the city centre. This trendy district is very close to the Paseo Marítimo and just a short walk from the cathedral and Palma’s prestigious yacht marina. The neighbourhood’s residents include local Majorcans and foreigners, mainly Scandinavians. The island’s international airport is just 15 minutes away by car. Also close by are the Tramuntana mountains, with their plentiful hiking and cycling routes, together with southwest Mallorca’s golf courses and white sandy beaches.

Santa Catalina stands out for its relaxed, pleasant, friendly atmosphere. Despite its new attraction for tourists and some building development, it still conserves its original charm. There are wonderful cafés, pop-up shops and many international restaurants which are popular all year round. The heart of this neighbourhood is its market, selling a wide range of fresh vegetables, fruit, fish and Majorcan produce. Santa Catalina boasts an impressive choice of restaurants and mix of cultures. And if you tire of the city, Mallorca’s widely assorted countryside is just a few minutes’ drive away.
